Burnet, Llano, Marble Falls trench warriors compete in Lineman Challenge

The trench controllers were on display during the Burnet Lineman Challenge May 28.

Marble Falls was the highest finishing Highland Lakes team with 36 points for third place followed by Burnet with 26 points and Llano with 22 points. Lorena won the challenge, and McGregor finished second. A tiebreaker was used to determine first and second.

“It went well,” said Burnet offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Tyler McIntosh, who served as the event director. “Everybody got out and competed well. It’s awesome to have these for the linemen.”

The Mustangs won the bench press challenge thanks to 100 lifts of 185 pounds. Burnet was second with 97. The Bulldogs won the tire flip by finishing at about 6 minutes 36 seconds, while Marble Falls was second in the event.

The tug-of-war was double elimination. McIntosh noted the Bulldogs finished in the top three in two other events, “struggled in the bench press and fought hard in the tug-of-war.”

Burnet was represented by seniors Jesse Bachmayer, Kaleb Maynard, Dalton Orrison, Cameron Stires and Knox Ward. Other team members included Johnny Charron, Luke Hudgins, Braeden Mckinzie, Jonathan Ryder, Hudson Talamantez, Caysn Taylor and Tyson Trim.

“I wanted our guys to get after it hard and compete,” McIntosh said. “The offseason is a grind, especially for linemen. They lift and condition. There’s a lot of other things for the skill players to do. It’s awesome for the linemen to get a chance to compete.”

Marble Falls, which finished no worse than fourth in any event, was represented by Jeremiah Bales, Bryan Beltran, Josua Garcia, Abbner Hernandez, Kaden Roberts, A.J. Scovil and Jose Soloranzo.

“I wanted to see the kids compete and have fun,” Mustangs offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Robert Draper said. “These big boys don’t always get the chance to do their thing. We made some mistakes, and we overcame them. The kids were competing, and sometimes you don’t get to see that with the big boys.”

Both coaches noted that teams clapped for each other throughout the event, which illustrates the camaraderie and respect linemen have for one another.

“I’m glad everybody came out,” the Burnet coach said. “It’s awesome to have Marble Falls and Llano and everybody else. For linemen, it’s everybody is for everybody. They put aside which school they’re representing. It’s a big shout-out to those guys who came. Hopefully we can get after it in the future.”

Burnet plans to attend the Hardin-Simmons state qualifying tournament and perhaps another. As of right now, Marble Falls doesn’t have any more Lineman Challenges scheduled.
